BLST 100: Introduction to Black Studies

Enrollment Limitation: Not open to students with prior credit in SOC 240 or BLST 240.
Acceptable for Credit: CSU, UC
Lecture 3 hours.

This course provides students with an introduction to the principal concepts and methods of Black studies as an interdisciplinary field of study. Topics include the social, political, creative aspects, philosophies, traditions, and economic experiences of Black people in America and throughout the world. Students explore the full scope of the African Diaspora and their experiences and responses to the cultural, economic, political, and social production of "Blackness." Using ethnic studies approaches, this course introduces students to concepts such as race and racism, ethnicity, decolonization, colonialism, segregation, resistance, anti-colonialism, liberation, institutions, politics, and culture.
